Not everyone who claims to belong to God actually does. In John 8, Jesus draws three powerful contrasts that reveal what true membership in God's family looks like. True disciples are not defined by their ancestry or background but by their active, ongoing commitment to His teaching. Freedom from sin comes only through Jesus, the Son, who alone has the power to transform slaves into sons and daughters. Belonging to God's family is not inherited or earned through good deeds or church attendance. It is received by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ. And once received, it changes everything about how we live, how we listen, and how we love others.
